Watch Out, Mainstream

e35cd67a4735d42fc26e7d302eb5592aThis year the Golden Globes had several nominees for original series, many were Netflix originals. Among those nominees were House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black. Unless you live under a rock then you’ve heard of these shows. Other series that haven’t received as much notoriety include Lilyhammer and Hemlock Grove. Both shows are a bit obscure by comparison but are just as good. Lilyhammer, the first series undertaken by Netflix, is now in its second season. It follows the path of a mob rat in custody of the police as part of witness protection. Steven Van Zandt (Silvio Dante on The Sopranos) playing the part of Frank Tagliano. He becomes a fixture in the community while running a night club and slowly integrating his mob know-how. While the Norwegians aren’t exactly Oscar-worthy actors, the subtitles make up for the difference. The varied cultural differences that are obvious in the first season seem to meld together with more typical American customs and interests as the second season comes together. If you like wise guy comedic dramas then this is a must-watch. But honestly, you should watch it because I say so.

Hemlock Grove is a little different. Okay, a lot different. It feeds into the werewolf craze but never really shows much. Everything is dark and secret. After a teenage girl is brutally murdered, the town looks for the killer while higher powers try to control different aspects of the investigation. Several notable actors including Famke Janssen star in the series. Also on Netflix is the most recent season of Arrested Development. While it takes a bit to get going, the series actually is pretty funny. Each of the first few episodes showcases each character’s individual “Arrested Development”. Once that is done, the real hilarity ensues and the classic banter between family members takes place.

Look for Season 2 House of Cards on February 14th, 2014.
